Robot kinematic data sharpen cholecystectomy prediction models; AI flags pneumoperitoneum on CT; robotic pancreaticojejunostomy shortens stays

An instrument tray lined with a folded cloth, holding a scalpel, toothed forceps and curved scissors laid side by side.

An Annals of Surgery study of 234 robotic cholecystectomy dissections found that task-level kinematic data from the robot add predictive information beyond preoperative clinical variables. A deep learning model detected pneumoperitoneum on CT more often than a conventional model, a nationwide cohort linked robotic lateral pancreaticojejunostomy to shorter stays but more fistulas, and Solventum said the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared its Restrata matrix for use with V.A.C. negative pressure wound therapy.

A retrospective study published online Oct. 22 in Annals of Surgery analyzed 234 Calot's triangle dissections during robotic cholecystectomy, 198 by attending surgeons and 36 by trainees, comparing models built on preoperative clinical variables, task-level kinematic metrics from the robot or both. Kinematic metrics alone matched the combined model for predicting surgeon experience and case complexity and outperformed clinical variables alone. For outcomes, the combined model reached an area under the curve of 0.753, versus 0.720 for each single-modality model, gains the authors called statistically significant but modest.

A retrospective diagnostic accuracy study published online Oct. 22 in Abdominal Radiology developed a deep learning model using CT scans from 263 patients with surgically confirmed gastrointestinal perforation and 78 normal controls. The nnSAM-based model detected 97.7% of positive cases in the internal test set versus 90.7% for a conventional nnUNet model, and 97.9% versus 85.4% in the external test set. The authors said the model showed improved accuracy for pneumoperitoneum detection; the study measured detection on scans, not effects on patient care.

A nationwide multicenter retrospective cohort study published online Oct. 20 in Surgical Endoscopy compared robotic with open lateral pancreaticojejunostomy for symptomatic wide-duct chronic pancreatitis. On the two primary outcomes, median hospital stay was 5 days after robotic surgery versus 7 days after open surgery (P < .001), and major complications occurred in 36.1% (13 of 36) versus 26.8% (26 of 97), a difference that was not significant (P = .405). Grade B/C postoperative pancreatic fistula was more common after robotic surgery, 22.2% versus 7.2% (P = .034).
  • FDA Oct 19, 2026
Solventum said Oct. 19 that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted 510(k) clearance for the combined use of its Restrata synthetic electrospun fiber matrix with V.A.C. therapy, specifically the V.A.C. Ulta Therapy Unit with the Peel and Place and Granufoam dressings and kits. The company said Restrata is a 100% synthetic, fully resorbable matrix that supports tissue formation through structural cues rather than growth factors. Solventum acquired Restrata's developer, Acera Surgical, in December 2025.
